Leyenda de amor de Zulia y Guaymaral
Cuando los indígenas del Norte de Santander aún eran libres, existían muchas comunidades, una en especial llamada cíneras, envió a su hija Zulia en misión de paz a tierras de los guanes. Estando Zullia allí, apareció por estas tierras un español, Diego de Montes y arrasó con la comunidad ciñera y al indefenso cacique lo ahorcó colgándolo de un árbol de caracolí. Zulia, que no se atrevía a creerlo, porque en su mente no cabía que el ser humano fuera tan perverso, se disfrazó de vasallo, llegó hasta muy cerca de su casa y pudo observar con sus propios ojos que efectivamente su padre colgaba de un árbol de caracolí. Con dolor e indignacion hizo un llamado a todos los indígenas de los alrededores, guanes, cáchiras, chitareros, cotecos y cúcutas. Con los cúcuta acudió un príncipe indígena llamado Guaymaral, hijo del cacique Mará que habitaba el lago de Coquivacoa.
Miles de ellos marcharon sobre el campamento español que se encontraba ubicado en el sitio actual de Arboledas y Diego de Montes no supo en qué momento pagó con su vida todas las maldades y robos que le había hecho a los indígenas. Esa noche los indígenas triunfantes festejaron con alegría y jolgorio, y Zulia y Guaymaral se unieron en matrimonio y fijaron su residencia al lado del torrentoso río Sulasquillo. Vivieron felices por varios años hasta que llegó otro español, Diego de Parada y los tomó al descuido arrasando con todo lo que encontraba a su paso. Hay quienes contaron que vieron a Zulia morir a caballo, incitando a sus guerreros a la lucha y Guaymaral herido, huyó buscando la protección de su padre y prometió que todo lo que tocara se llamaría como su gran amor, Zulia. Es así cuando mal herido atraviesa el torrentoso río Sulasquilla y lo bautiza Zulia. El pueblo donde vivió ahora se llama Zulia y cuando toma posesión de sus tierras a la muerte de su padre, se crea el Estado Zulia de Venezuela.

In the past, the North Santander natives enjoyed still their freedom , there were many communities, one especially called citrus trees , sent their daughter Zulia to the Guanes lands to do peace agreements. While Zullia was there, a Spaniard, Diego de Montes, appeared in these lands and razed the ciñera community and hanged the helpless chief by hanging him from a snail tree. Zulia, who did not believe it, because in her mind it was not possible for the human being to be so perverse, she disguised herself as a vassal, she came up close to her house and observed with her own eyes that her father effectively have been hanged. With pain and indignation, she called on all the surrounding natives, guanes, cachiras, chitareros, cotecos and cucutas. She met with the indigenous prince named Guaymaral, the chief Mará's son , who inhabited Lake Coquivacoa.
Thousands of them marched on the Spanish camp that was located in the current site of Arboledas and Diego de Montes did not know in what moment he paid with his life all the evils and robberies he had done to the natives. That night all of them celebrated with joy and revelry, and Zulia and Guaymaral got married and established their residence next to the torrential Sulasquillo River. They lived happily for several years until another Spaniard, Diego de Parada arrived and took them distracted sweeping away everything he found in his path. There are those who said that they saw Zulia die on horseback, inciting their warriors to fight and Guaymaral wounded, fled seeking the protection of his father and promised that everything he touched would be called his great love, Zulia. This is when badly wounded crosses the torrential Sulasquilla River and baptizes it as Zulia. The town where he lived now is called Zulia and when he takes possession of his land at the death of his father, the Zulia State of Venezuela is created.
